Why Should You Think About Fashion?

For this particular piece I was determined to channel my inner Miranda Priestley and bring to you a discussion as to why fashion affects each one of us, whether we are a buyer for a leading fashion brand like Gucci, or an accountant in a national bank.

I have learnt over my course of reading that every trend in fashion goes through a process of introduction, peak and decline. Now this holds true to the designers creating garments for their multi-millionaire brands, as well as to people like us shopping from offline or online retail. There is a new stock which after a period of time is put out for sale and then permanently removed off the racks. Based on our economic levels, we are categorized into being first hand consumers or late adopters. But at the end of the day, each trend does reach all the levels of consumers.

You would say, that since you just order clothes from let’s say ‘Myntra’, how would the silk couture presented on Vogue’s anniversary edition have anything to do with you? But it certainly does. Anything and everything that we buy has undergone a developmental stage. That includes developing the fabric where the science and technology are infused to have a right blend or the right flair. Moreover, the texture, the fit and shape, the pattern, everything is prepared from scratch. Only after it comes out as a designer’s muse, it is put out to the market as a prototype. Soon various versions of it are developed keeping in mind the likeability, cultural differences, affordability and various other commercial factors. In this process, what was once introduced as a path-breaking design, a version of it ends up in our wardrobe.

The brightest example to explain this whole concept would be a ‘Little Black Dress’. In 1926, Vogue had mentioned how Coco Chanel’s silk sheath little black dress would be ‘a dress which the world will wear’. Now the rest is history.

We are all connected to the industry in one way or the other. Even our priciest possessions can be traced back to a connection like such. That makes it important to know what you wear and know why you wear it. Now here’s your opportunity to stay close to something that affects each one of you.
